Sitting outside a GS25 late on a Saturday evening, I noticed quite a few interestingly designed bicycles.

the photo is poor quality, but you get the idea

I’m seeing a lot of college students with colored wheels on their bikes to.

    Is it a new thing?

I’ve only noticed this recently. The bike in the photo was actually made in the UK as the lad showed me label. However, I bet quite a few are made in China – just as many are in the UK. Chinese manufactured bike always wobble and creak when I work them and it’s never long before bits drop off or simply seize up.

Yes, customised bikes with special accessories are now an important part of youth culture. See the Wikipedia entry for “fixed-gear bicycle”. Originally the bikes were track bikes (meant for use on a velodrome) but people liked their minimalist looks so much they started to use them on the street.

Decent colour co-ordinated custom-built machines can easily cost more than two million won. Those flashing LEDs on the wheels are not cheap either, costing more than 100 dollars I think

Have the same types of bicycle appeared in British culture?
